My original plan was to become a journalist because I was an English major at UCLA. My main focus right now is releasing as many singles as I possibly can throughout the year and just having fun with it. I think K-pop has definitely influenced my music as well.
VOA: You once joked that the fun part of having a “shit coming-of-age” is getting to advise others going through the same thing.
Sometimes I look back at those recordings, I’m just like, Damn, I ate that as a little 13-year-old because I was figuring out my shit. This allows me to do both more vulnerable songs and more in-your-face fun songs that are more fictional.”
VOA: You’ve mentioned how Tumblr shaped your aesthetics and creative voice.
Particularly because I watched a lot of coming-of-age movies, and I never really saw myself in those roles. That’s all. Sometimes people need to speak about those experiences, and that’s okay because I was very much struggling with that. You never know if it’s going to hit well with your audience or not. I feel like my understanding of these themes evolved as I processed my coming-of-age years a bit more, as I grew up and matured.
Do I write like that now? I think DSPs need to assess AI mixing of already existing songs, because if you change it enough using AI, it won’t be tracked in the metadata. Everything just kind of happened all at once when I started posting videos of my original songs, and people started paying attention to them. You never really know what the reception will be until you put the song out and it’s out in the world.
VOA: Many of your songs, from Killer Queen to Stacy’s Brother, touch on themes of rebellion and transformation.
I wrote all the treatments for the music videos myself and did a lot of the production work myself.
While filming the “Stacy’s Brother” video, Tsai then had to play the role of the hot football player, which he felt strange, but also cathartic, since he was actually insecure in high school. Yes, Killer Queen and Stacy’s Brother build on outlandish narratives that obviously haven’t happened in real life, but at the same time, I think it’s fun, and it creates a space where people can feel free.
Because you have made songs about being very open about your sexuality, like boy bi and Stacy’s brother. as we stared at him passionately making out with a white man for millions to see, i knew that he was the perfect candidate for our interview series.

His latest single, One of the Boys, challenges the notion that masculinity defines acceptance within the LGBTQIA+ community. I think the funny thing about that song is I looked back at it, and I was just like, Wow, these lyrics are so forward and in your face about everything. I thought it was so beautiful, and you could tell there was passion and intention behind all of their music.
