There were ways the show could’ve made this work, even without an explicit tie to the larger supernatural arc. It was nice to get to work with them and they were so cute. For so long, you and the main ensemble were the youngest people on the show. What was it like to now have new rising actors on set who might have looked up to you? How are you gonna write it?” Eventually, they said they had it, and I read it by the end of the year in August or September.
By coming out to his friends and family first, Will took away the power of Vecna's threat.
Will's Sexuality Has Been A Topic Of Discussion Since Stranger Things Season 1
Will coming out in season 5 was far from a shock. The Will Byers of season five has a lot more screen time than the Will of season three or four, but I don’t seem him or feel for him like I once did.
Of all the kids who aged out of their roles in Stranger Things, Will may be the biggest casualty.
Oh my God, it was endless. I mean, I don’t even think we were friends.
Maya speaks like a madman so I asked, “How do you learn all these lines and not think about it in the scene?” She said, “It’s not about how well you know it, it’s how long you’ve known it for, so just prep for months before.” So I’d just go through it morning and night every day for months before shooting, but I wouldn’t prep how to say it or how to feel.
Honestly, I was so wrapped up in my emotions and what I was feeling that I kind of blocked out everyone around me. So I could either start with a wide and kind of explore it and feel out the scene and then go to the close up, or go straight into it.
I was worried that I might need to, but honestly, it was perfect. Did you write it?
He’s kind of more assertive and self-assured. Instead, Stranger Things struggled to find a place for the character, focusing too much on Will’s jealousy of Eleven and his bitterness about his friends growing up.
That continued in season four, even as the show addressed his sexuality more directly. It’s nice to play that side of him, and not just play someone who’s always walked all over.
It was like a 12-hour day of just that monologue.
It definitely helped me realize, “Wow, we’ve come so far. His friends referred to him as “no longer Gage” — a phrase that clearly resonated with Will, who earned the nickname “Zombie Boy” after seemingly returning from the dead in season one. I didn’t want to let her go, and I realized she really became this motherly figure to me at work during these 10 years.
You also share a lot of scenes with Maya Hawke this Season.
In response, Will tells Joyce and then Mike that he has something he needs to share, not just with the two of them but with everyone.
