The good and bad of labels

At some point in our sexual experience, labels can be important—quite liberating and affirming. They might be into cuckolding, hotwifing, foot fetishism, and other erotic interests that involve a man, but it isn’t about the man’s gender but rather about the sexual experience or fetish.

This sort of homophobia is rampant in closeted gay and bisexual men. Straight men who have sex with men have no fear or disgust around this. [Russell, 54]

“Interestingly,” write Carrillo and Hoffman, “being dominated by a man seemed to them less threatening than being dominated by a steady female partner, perhaps because it could be construed as a temporary fantasy, instead of meaning a permanent change in the gender balance.”

This same dynamic popped up the last study on this subject I covered — the idea that men “get” something about sex that women don’t, and that because there’s a fully mutual understanding that what’s going on is just sex, same-sex experiences can be set off safely away from the rest of one’s (heterosexual) identity.

Straight men, on the other hand, remember no such attraction or interest. And while some men are willing to recognize that their sexual behaviours might qualify their being called bisexual — and they may privately identify with that label — they feel that there is no contradiction between holding a private awareness of being bisexual and a public persona as straight or heterosexual.

Yet, they don’t always encompass the full range of human sexual experiences.

2. Consider this: When a woman watches lesbian porn or admits to having fantasies about hooking up with another woman, she is accepted, even fetishized. Bisexuality: While heteroflexibility and bisexual men may seem similar, they are distinct.

Mostly straight — Harvard University Press. They’re not gay or bi.

Kinks and Fetishes: Some men have sexual fantasies and engage in BDSM with other men. Most often they grow up to be happily married to a woman, never having thought of themselves as gay or bi.

Beyoncé Is Now a Billionaire The Cowboy Carter Tour earnings were enough to push her into a new echelon. Studies have found that a significant number of heterosexual men report having had at least one same-sex experience.

When examining research on sexually fluid behavior among straight men, several studies provide valuable insights into the prevalence of same-sex experiences and how they relate to sexual identity.

These occasional same-sex encounters may be driven by curiosity, emotional connection, or context, but he continues to see himself as primarily attracted to women.

Heteroflexibility vs. [Dustin, 28]

In addition to being perhaps the first instance in recorded history of someone comparing their sexual orientation to George W.

Bush’s counterterrorism doctrine, Simon’s statement contains an important point: Carrillo and Hoffman note that many of their respondents simply “see no real personal or social advantages that would stem from publicly adopting an identity as bisexual or gay.” In many cases, it may not be in their interests to do so — hence the compartmentalization of their same-sex encounters.

Another reason for such compartmentalization is that it allows some men the opportunity to explore parts of their identities they feel they couldn’t safely in heterosexual settings:

For most of my sex life I’m in control of things.

[I’m bisexual] only with men behind closed doors. At least male sexual fluidity opens up the possibility that men having sex with other men doesn’t automatically mean they’re gay or bi. These norms can create pressure to conform to traditional gender roles, which typically exclude the possibility of same-sex sexual desire or behavior.
