They can often be the breeding ground for advocacy and support, extending beyond just nightlife. Though if you visit on certain evenings, you can catch drag shows and TV viewings of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Drag Bingo is hosted in both English and Spanish on Thursday nights, as well, so it’s great club for tourists—and a fun opportunity to hang with locals.

We hitched a short five-minute ride with a friend of a friend from the bar and arrived at El Local en Santurce. This gay-owned, gay-friendly property is ranked as the top accommodation on TripAdvisor, providing apartment-style amenities featuring full kitchens, private bathrooms, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, in-room safes, cable TV, and DVD players.

For those seeking a spacious and relaxing retreat for a larger group, Coqui del Mar stands out as a prime destination in San Juan, ideally located near the beach in Ocean Park.

Fast-food restaurants, a bar with salsa dancing, a street food market. In between acts, the DJs did a few different types of sets—there was techno music and some kind of pop. Consider an evening nap so you can party into the wee hours.

  • Stay Safe: Stick to well-lit areas, watch your drink, and consider using ride-sharing services to get around.
  • Embrace the Local Scene: Don’t hesitate to engage with locals.

A glass bookshelf in a corner with a weird assortment of things: a calculator from the 90s, a toy dinosaur skeleton, a comic book.

Performances continued throughout the night. But, this is Puerto Rico, so things were also a bit… different. Music came on, and a performer set up in the background. Some craft cocktail tours even visit the bar as part of a nightlife experience!

The clubs dotting this Caribbean paradise are a testament to an enduring and supportive LGBTQ community.

    Safety and Legal Considerations

When visiting gay clubs in Puerto Rico, you must be aware of both the safety and legal considerations. I’d only arrived in Puerto Rico a few hours before—just enough time to dip my feet into the Caribbean and walk barefoot on the beach.

Back at my gay-owned guesthouse, I got some recommendations for a night out.

El Cojo is the most famous of the three main bars, but A Pedir De Boca and La Esquina de Polo are all popular (and next door to one another).

The three LGBTQ pubs are most popular on Thursday nights when San Juan’s university students flood the street. Multiple people had described the area to me as a “hipster neighborhood,” so I was excited to explore.

Along Calle Loiza, I found the typical trappings of any American travel destination.

These venues are among the finest hotspots for adventurous tourists and locals alike, ensuring a memorable night out.

Whether you are traveling solo for a relaxing escape or planning a getaway with someone special, you will undoubtedly feel at home in these popular gay and lesbian destinations.

Oceano is an upscale, open-air bar and restaurant that draws a diverse crowd, mixing gay and straight patrons.

Don’t miss the happy hour specials when there are food deals, as well.

    7. Notably, Thursday evenings are reserved for karaoke, and drag shows occur once or twice a month.

    El Chinchorro de W

Located in the Santurce neighborhood, El Chinchorro de W, translating to “Hole in the Wall,” serves as a favored late-night haven for those reveling in the San Juan nightlife.

The fun and funky atmosphere, elaborate cocktails, and friendly bartenders make it a comfortable escape from the street bustle. As you explore the Condado area, many venues’ vibrant energy and inclusive atmosphere reinforce its reputation as a hotspot for LGBTQ-friendly nightlife.

The most famous gay club in Condado is the Oasis Tapas & Lounge (Facebook).

    Gay Clubs Outside San Juan

While San Juan is known for its vibrant LGBTQ+-friendly nightlife, several other cities across Puerto Rico also offer exciting spots for the community.

There was the rooftop techno club decorated with a million live plants.

There’s even an outdoor patio which makes it especially popular with groups of friends. As Puerto Rico’s largest LGBTQ club, it hosts a number of fun events. It’s a must-visit location on Calle San Sebastián for those seeking a small but energetic environment.

I had a handful of bingo cards (one from each drink I ordered) but didn’t end up winning anything.

After more than a few drinks at Circo, we were on our way to the next club.
