It was abrupt. So, with that, San Francisco has signed Matt Gay to their practice squad.

Gay signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Washington Commanders back in April, but he was released earlier this week and has already found a new home.

"I don't really know where I am," Gay said. I've kicked a lot of balls and felt comfortable with my stuff...

"The uprights are the same wherever you go. Gay was kicking 68.4 percent on field goals (13-for-19) during the 2025 NFL season with Washington.

Across his seven-year NFL career, which has included stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Rams, Indianapolis Colts and Commanders, Gay owns an 84 percent field-goal percentage.

The Washington Commanders cut Gay on Monday and signed former 49ers kicker Jake Moody off the Chicago Bears practice squad.

Piñeiro, who signed with San Francisco in September after the team cut Moody, sustained a Grade 1 hamstring injury in the 49ers' 41-22 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at State Farm Stadium and is considered week to week.

The 49ers tried out several free-agent kickers on Wednesday, per NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, but ultimately went with Gay.

It will be difficult for Gay to replace the field-goal production of Piñeiro, who is a perfect 22-for-22 during his time in the Bay but also has missed three extra-point attempts.

"Coming back from Madrid Monday morning, and then getting released and flying to Utah and flying from Utah to here. I didn't really see it coming, but again, it's just one of those things that I'm grateful for. He’s making progress.”

Barrows said he spoke with several orthopedic surgeons about the potential timeline for Fred Warner and that the consensus was that people typically need 4 months — 16 weeks — to recover.

If Warner returns during the playoffs, he would be in line to return sometime in the middle of the NFL Playoffs.

“I think it’s a definite possibility,” Barrows said of Warner during his interview with Carmichael Dave and Jason Ross.

Blessed to have an opportunity to just continue to kick, wherever that may be."

Need a news break? It's been a lot of travel, but I'm blessed and grateful to have this opportunity."

Things have been quite a whirlwind for Gay, especially considering he didn't expect to be back with another team this quickly.

"After they released me on Monday, I didn't think I'd be getting a call any time soon," Gay said.

The San Francisco 49ers have been ravaged by injuries this season, but could an improbable return for linebacker Fred Warner be on the table?

During Tuesday morning’s edition of The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross, The Athletic’s Matt Barrows joined the show to share injury updates on several players (including Warner), lay out the road ahead for the 49ers as they push for the postseason, and much more.

After suffering a devastating ankle injury in Week 6, a return this season for San Francisco 49ers star linebacker Fred Warner didn’t look likely.

Warner, who fractured and dislocated his right ankle while facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is “gunning” for a return during the postseason, says The Athletic’s 49ers beat writer Matt Barrows.

“I guarantee you he is gunning for a return during the playoffs,” Barrows said.

The veteran, who has made a Pro Bowl and won a Super Bowl, isn't worried about playing for a new team, his fifth since entering the NFL as a fifth-round pick out of Utah in 2019.

"Year 7 for me, kicking is kicking," Gay said. "Guys have been having good years, so I was prepared for my bye week, or Washington's bye week, which I was headed home for.

I've kicked a lot of balls, and I feel like I'm hitting the ball well right now."

Pineiro has been incredible for San Francisco, so it's tough to expect Gay to be as good, but he's the best option the team could've found at this point in the year.
