Initially, the heroes conclude the threat as moot when they learn Mikihisa was assigned as female at birth but panic when alien technology allows him to transition fully. All we know is that his motives are purely self centred and chaotic. Instead of killing (ahem) his gay/gay coded villain, Togashi gives him an whole ass husband.

Hisoka is unapologetically androgynous, and not in any way heterosexual and I think that's beautiful.

.

The main character, Gen Otoda, is yet another femme-presenting male, who looks like a prototype of Kurapika’s design.

If I were analysing the work of another writer I would dismiss this as lazy writing and characterization, but knowing Togashi's writing history it's worth delving deeper into this.

Togashi has not flinched away from writing LGBT characters. Along the way, he encounters friends and foes in a world filled with martial arts, adventure, and paranormal elements.

However, while this portrayal of queer love was groundbreaking in a 1990s shōnen series, the handling of queer characters and themes fell short by modern standards. Butterflies are often symbols of transformation and beauty, but for Shaiapouf, this transformation is incomplete. This matters because, well. Along the way, he encounters friends and foes in a world filled with martial arts, adventure, and paranormal elements.

The story follows Gon Freecss, a boy who discovers his father is a legendary Hunter, and embarks on a journey to become one himself. However, they develop a solution that permits Mikihisa to live in the body he’s most comfortable in, while still averting the end of the human race. He doesn't give a damn about what anyone else thinks and while his exterior is performative it's also completely unapologetic which is so important in this context.

I think one of the most important things (well, people) in Hisoka's story is Illumi Zoldyck.

So much of what makes Togashi’s writing shine is the internal monologue that contextualizes each character’s decisions and takes the audience on their emotional journey. They're engaged and have a pre-nup agreement which is supposed to act as a death contract but like... That's the most dramatic and unnecessary thing in the world.

This dedication goes beyond duty, venturing into deeply emotional and arguably romantic territory.

We also see some of the negatives tropes particularly associated with gay men at the centre of Hisoka's character: predatory tendancies and hypersexuality. His fierce clinging to a specific ideal of Meruem can be seen as a metaphor for the rigidity often imposed on queer identities by societal or internalized expectations.

The Violin-playing Butterfly Is More Human Than He Admits

Shaiapouf reflects the darker side of queer representation in media.

This acknowledges that it’s not the end of the world to allow another human bodily autonomy.

Miyuki and Mikihisa Walked So That Alluka Could Run

When Hunter x Hunter entered serialization in 1998, Togashi’s approach to LGBTQ+ representation evolved significantly.

The franchise spans manga, multiple anime adaptations, films, OVAs, and video games.
