Not only does she question her idea of allyship, but her own relationship with sexual intimacy. Indeed, the fears surrounding the episode can be relegated to bigotry, and, even more than 30 years after it aired, it remains a special moment in television history. It should be noted that Barr was a valuable star at the time, with Berg explaining: “Whatever we feel about Roseanne today given the political situation, we have to remember she really furthered the cause of gay rights with that episode.” Thus, the episode made it to the air, but that was not the end of its troubles.

The episode was originally scheduled to air at 8:00 PM, but ABC shifted it to 9:30 PM in hopes it would soften the controversy and was even proceeded by a parental advisory warning.

"Oh, I just can't say the word!" she said, answering her own question. Because I am queer as two motherf--kers. Not only was it groundbreaking to show a same-sex kiss on network television, but the implications and actions that followed were powerful and were qualities that were not lost on the network or its sponsors.

'Roseanne's Groundbreaking Episode Caused Controversy

While shows like Friends and Ellen would take on their own queer stories in the years that followed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (to varying degrees of success), Roseanne’s outing was a first of its kind, and, as such, caused intense backlash.

Roseanne Barr goes on bizarre rant about homophobic slur; claims, 'I put the 'Q' in LGBTQ'

Roseanne Barr is at it again.

The comedian, who in the last month has blamed both Michelle Obama and former co-star Sara Gilbert for getting her fired from her hit sitcom reboot last May, marked Easter with a pair of bizarre, disjointed, NSFW video rants on her YouTube channel.

Barr actually posted 10 videos Sunday – many of them about farming on her property in Hawaii – but in the two clips that are getting attention, she talks about who can and can't use homophobic slurs and when it becomes hate speech.

In the first clip, she argues that the slur in question is a "hateful word," especially "when it's one gay calling another gay guy that."

But if no one is supposed to use that word, she asks, why are gays using it themselves?

Sara , 44, tweeted her outrage after the comedian tweeted racist remarks about former Obama administration adviser Jarrett.

Roseanne's namesake show was cancelled less than an hour later.

“Roseanne and Tom Arnold – when they were still a couple – said they would buy the episode back and put it up on HBO,” Zimmerman explained. I just got tired of hearing bullshit about it, so I wanted to do [this episode]," she said.

Disgraced TV legend Roseanne Barr has announced she is queer while hitting out at the use of the word 'f*g'.

In an impassioned YouTube video seen by Fox News, the star reportedly spoke to her followers about the use of the 'hateful' word before slipping in: 'Because I am queer as two motherf--kers.

What?

While the episode isn’t as big or as biting as All in the Family’s queer storylines, it’s certainly an impressive feat.

"Roseanne" had its share of gay-friendly moments, and Roseanne Barr looked back at one of the most memorable on HuffPost Live on Friday -- the kiss she shared with Mariel Hemingway in the episode "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

While chatting about Roseanne's new documentary "Roseanne For President!," host Josh Zepps showed a clip of the famous kiss, which first aired 21 years ago.

"It's so different to watch it now ...

They share Buck, 24. Despite calls for the episode not to air, and the financial risk that came with it, the episode was a massive hit and remains an integral part of TV history. But it is a hateful word and you should get rid of it."
