This British film traces the unlikely whirlwind romance between a drag queen and a corporate executive in London.

Across 94 nonstop minutes, we see a group of high school girls battling over the attention of their gay classmate in an effort to improve their social currency. On hospital picture day, he meets Jay Kurundkar (Jonathan Groff), a white man who was adopted by Indian parents and is devoted to the culture. The film sits at 88 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes and is streaming on Paramount+.

Sauna

Denmark’s Sauna turns the heat up as Johan, a sauna attendant, falls for William, a trans man taking time out from uni.

The film holds a 97 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Amid the strife, there are moments of goofy levity, and the story is told with unwaveringly gorgeous cinematography.

This rom-com by Alice Wu deals with cultural clashes among multiple generations of a Chinese American family.

But I’m a Cheerleader (1999)

Now considered a cult classic, But I’m a Cheerleader takes a dark side of queer history and gives it a satirical, campy twist.

He’s a quiet, glum child whose mother seems to be his only real source of warmth or affection — until he meets Maddy (Jack Haven). The genre has evolved over the years, moving from niche markets to mainstream acclaim, and these movies are a testament to that journey.

Among the must-watch titles are Brokeback Mountain, a groundbreaking film that portrays the intense and tragic love story between two cowboys; Free Fall, a German drama exploring the electrifying yet tumultuous relationship between two police officers; and God’s Own Country, which tells the tender and raw story of a young farmer who finds unexpected love with a migrant worker.

But I’m a Cheerleader points out the obvious in a stylized and extremely goofy way: Gay conversion camp is a great place to meet other horny gay people.

Each of these films brings a unique perspective to the table, offering viewers a profound look into the joys and struggles of gay life.

Eventually, they each have to come to terms with the ways their loved ones deviate from their traditional ideals, and the process of getting there is silly, emotional, and ultimately charming.
